Ward 12A is a locked psychiatric unit. The diverse range of patients frequently exhibit unusual symptoms and behaviours that are challenging and confronting for the staff. At the same time, some staff have their own agenda, institutional ideas and prejudicial inclinations.
Richard has mixed feelings about his need for hospital care. He hopes for a short stay and to get back home quickly to his wife and daughter, but this desire is shattered when he is harshly treated, threatened, drugged and even poisoned.
His struggle against the system finds some support from Theresa, a recently graduated nurse. She tries to stand up for the patients but faces some serious conflicts with some of the other well entrenched staff.
Eddy is a long serving and burnt out psychiatric nurse on the verge of retirement. Keeping Richard locked up will serve his post retirement plans just nicely. He has a new relationship and the promise of a new life ahead of him – or so he believes.
Richard’s unexpected pychotic episode sends the ward into chaos, with many patients responding adversely in response to the disturbing incident that has occurred.
At an opportunistic moment Theresa gives Richard the chance to escape but his torment is set to continue when he finds his wife has left him and it appears that his nemesis Eddy is involved.
The search for the truth shifts to South Australia and it looks like someone may have got away with murder.
