And so we go to John 6:51, to where Jesus gave them what we call the Eucharistic Doctrine. “I Myself, am the living bread, come down from Heaven. If anyone eats of this Bread, he will live forever. And the bread that I will give is My flesh, for the life of the world.”
The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, “How can this man give us His flesh to eat?” Then Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly I say unto you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man, and drink His blood, you have no life in you.”
At that point, many of His people got up and began to leave. His disciples said “This is a hard saying. Who can listen to it?”
So, you see, the controversy began right away, even there, at the very moment when He made the Eucharistic statement, controversy began over the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist.
