The Story of Joshua Higgins is the story of a young man who seeks to build a life for himself in a new land. Although it is told as the story of one man and what he encountered over the years in the land that became known as the Dakota Territory, and later South Dakota, it is really a collection of stories of many men and their conflicts with nature and the other dangers they faced on the Frontier. Each chapter is almost a story in and of itself of the conflicts those men faced in their quest for a future in the Frontier. Although this story is fiction, it shows what it took for those men of adventure to make their way in the wilderness. In the early days, most of these men were frontiersmen, some of them eventually became ranchers and farmers who settled down and made homes for their families. It is also the story of those things that helped shape the men of the Frontier, and helped our country grow into the great country it is today.
