Originally published in 1833, this is the first of two volumes of Mary Shelley's science fiction novel set in 2100 concerning an apocalyptic future in which a catastrophic plague has destroyed almost all of mankind. Best known for the gothic novel Frankenstein, Shelley was also a prolific writer of short stories, travelogues and editorials. Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive.
