After Ferragus and The Duchess of Langeais, La Fille aux yeux d'or closed in 1834 the trilogy of the History of the Thirteen, where Balzac invented a kind of community dedicated to the service of the devil.

Nestled in the heart of Paris, the mansion house of the San-Réal is an eastern enclave that shelters the saphic loves of the Marquise de San-Réal, a kind of "Othello female" and Paquita, the Girl with golden eyes. But the young girl is also coveted by Henri de Marsay, a young Parisian dandy who is crazy about it. The boudoir with its intoxicating atmosphere where Henri meets Paquita becomes the setting for a terrible crime.

As a perfect storyteller, Balzac supports to its end the rhythm and intensity of a cruel story, in which the wounds of love - or rather self-love? - are blindly repaired in the blood.
