Shikibu Izumi (和泉式部) Japanese poet and lady-in-waiting; year of her death is unknown, with the last Imperial correspondence from her being in 1033. Izumi's talent was recognized in her lifetime, but her reputation continued to grow after her death, and now she is considered one of the greatest poets of the golden age of female Court poets. Scholar Amy Lowell has stated that in Japan, Izumi's poems "are considered never to have been excelled in freshness and freedom of expression."
“The Diary of Izumi Shikibu” (和泉式部日記 Izumi Shikibu Nikki) records events in the life of a mid-Heian period Japanese poet who had a series of affairs at the court of empress Joto Mon'in in Kyoto. This work was included into “Diaries of Court Ladies of Old Japan” and translated by Annie Shepley Omori (1856–c. 1943) and Kochi Doi (1886–1979). Let's read and enjoy one of the most famous classical writing of Japanese literature.
