THE CLOUDS is revised version of a comedy first performed at the Dionysia in 423 BC, and revised by Aristophanes several years later. The play satirizes intellectual fashions in classical Athens. The original version has not survived.
Aristophanes (c.446 BC - c.386 BC) was a comic playwright of ancient Athens. Eleven of his approximately forty plays survive, providing modern understanding of the Old Comedy genre. Little is known of his personal life.
