Rebecca began to relate what had transpired since Friday afternoon. Captain Gomez listened with rapt attention. She hadn’t gotten very far into the scenario when the officers and others out in the main area of the building heard the captain exclaim, “They did what?” Then all was silent.

A half an hour later, the four teens left the captain’s office. They slowly walked through the waiting area, trying not to meet with any stares from people seated in the lobby. As soon as they exited the building, they dashed to Lucas’s car. He couldn’t unlock the door fast enough. “Lucas, if you had a newer model car, you wouldn’t need to fumble with your key.” Adam teased his friend, trying to ease the tension that they were all feeling.

“Wednesday is a half day. That afternoon, the boys will get their notices. I’m glad I’m not in their shoes,” Rebecca voiced what Lucas, Adam, and Carrie were all feeling.
