Mark McCartney is dead. The actor murdered in his home. With no motives and the vast majority of the State's Police Force engaged in the never-ending struggle to keep the traffic flowing the investigation is left to a pay by case detective. A man expected to write the case off as unsolved and leave it at that.
Detective Robert Fowler was quite happy to leave it at that, too. Until someone nailed a dead cat to his door, he met China, took on the traffic and started to smell dead people. Now the killer wants him dead and the only person telling him anything is Mark McCartney.
With the heat and traffic on the rise, a kidnapped lover, a damaged body, and the only assistance available a rookie constable, Fowler races to solve the mystery, bring the killer to justice, and rescue the woman he'd really like to love.
The Adelaide of the near future is a place where cars rule, the climate is changing and amidst the confusion a serial killer is acting with impunity. Robert Fowler has lost much that made him a person. He gets by investigating cases for which, the police, preoccupied with traffic control, have no time. His job is to investigate, not solve, just investigate. That's where he would have stopped if it hadn't been for the smell of aniseed.
