Having lived most of his life in the city, middleaged Peter Woodley returns to the country town where he was born, to arrange the funeral of his father, a very private man whose marriage to Peter’s mother did not survive the wartime homecomings of 1945.

While clearing up the old man’s workshop and household effects he meets Mike Coote, about Peter’s age and the son of his father’s best mate. It is Mike Coote who has been left all the engineering equipment, although both Peter and Mike are at a loss to understand why.

Set in wide Australian city and country landscapes, this novel is a fifty year retrospective journey across three generations, in which Peter’s and Mike’s stories evolve, along with those of the men and women who connected them to each other far more deeply than they know.
