My Heart Cracked Open and It Bled is the result of what happened when a man was broken by insensitive criticism. The compositions that followed were emotional illustrations of the pain of rejection and severe loneliness. The bleeding of the heart is not only attributed to the rejection and loneliness suffered as an aftereffect of a sour affair, it is also attributed to the abandonment and negligence and sorrow endured by the author’s parents. From the center of his misery, the author employs his imagination to fantasize what love would be like—might be like—if he was fortunate enough to find it.
