A fire in a shack where Gravy Bones recorded burnt down and it was feared the master recordings were destroyed. In 2011 the masters were found stored in the attic of a former whorehouse that Gravy Bones used to "patronize".

This album is regarded as "dark" by many critics due to its topics of alcohol, the Devil, and women of questionable morality. The lyrics reflect Gravy Bones slow immersion into poverty and alcohol abuse.

Many critics have pointed out the references Gravy Bones makes to the Devil and "no good women" in this album. It must be remembered this is at the time in his life when his girlfriend did, in fact, run off with a man to Kansas City. The man she ran off with was a fake preacher, hence the reason for the repeated imagery in this album.

Leadbelly was present when the masters of the album were recorded and later commented that "that damn cat album Gravy Bones did makes me want to murder someone...AGAIN".
