A God in Ruins: by Kate Atkinson | Conversation Starters

A Brief Look Inside:
A God in Ruins by Kate Atkinson is the companion novel to her popular book Life After Life. A God in Ruins focuses on Teddy, the little brother of Ursula from Life After Life. In Life After Life, Teddy has died in World War II. However, in A God in Ruins, Teddy is still alive after the War with a wife and a daughter. During World War II, Teddy joins the Royal Air Force to escape the monotony of civilian life. He vows that if he makes it out alive, he will live a life of kindness no matter what life brings him. The novel fast forwards to the future where Teddy is facing his wife's illness, a daughter who hates him, and two grandchildren who are often neglected. Yet, Teddy handles it all with kindness and courage as he vowed to do many years ago. A God in Ruins by Kate Atkinson was awarded the Costa Book Award and was on the longlist for the Women's Prize for Fiction in 2015. It was called “one of the best novels” of the century by author Gillian Flynn.
