Alexander Stephens was a diminutive and sickly man. A lawyer who attended Franklin College, the school eventually became the University of Georgia. Alexander served in the Georgia legislature and later in both houses of Congress. As a young man he was assigned to an orphan's home. An intriguing person, he was interested in numerous topics and was also very benevolent. My research indicates that he turned down no one who asked for his help, regardless of race. One of Stephens most enduring friendships was with the great Southern storyteller Richard Malcolm Johnston. I've found an interview with Johnston from an 1894 New York newspaper.
